Turn left at Brynderwyn and travel along the Twin Coast Discovery Route to unlock secrets found only on the Kauri Coast.
The town of Dargaville, nestled on the banks of the Northern Wairoa River, was a former frontier settlement. Visit the wonderful Dargaville Museum, fascinating Zizania Mill, Big River Art Gallery and a Kauri Gallery.
To the south of Dargaville is the Kaipara Harbour which is home to many renowned shipwrecks and the historic Kaipara Lighthouse. To the north is the beautiful Kai Iwi Lakes, Trounson Kauri Park, Mainland Island and the Waipoua Kauri Forest.
Layers of history
250,000-year-old lignite on the bottom, volcanic ash from Rotorua eruption around 200,000 years ago and 820 years ago a massive explosion blew 100 cubic kilometres of rock into the earth's atmosphere, from what is now Lake Taupo as seen on Ripiro Beach
